Four Reasons Why College is an Investment in Yourself

There comes a time in every student's college career when they are faced with that frightening question, "What if I don't get a job in my field of study?" In 2013, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York* released study results showing that only 27 percent of college graduates had a job related to their major. That's not a very comforting number.

However, regardless of what job you land, it's important to understand that college will still be one of the best investments you ever make in yourself. Here's why:

1. In today's market, there is a positive relationship between education level and income. That means, the person who received a bachelors degree is likely to make more money over their lifetime than the person who only holds a high school diploma. Even if your career is unrelated to your major, you could still be making a good sum of money.

2. College challenges your way of thinking. The people you meet and the classes you take will force you to reconsider the way you viewed the world in high school. You will be challenged to think deeply and ask the big questions.

3. You will be learning at the forefront of discovery. The best professors keep their ears tuned to the heartbeat of what is going on in their field (and often do research in their field). They will also challenge you to do the same. When else will you be given the opportunity/have the time to keep up on all the breaking news of your field of interest?

4. A bachelors degree, masters degree or doctorates require a lot of time, energy and dedication (and money). Completing any one of these, is something to be proud of! Your degree will always serve as a reminder that hard work pays off.

There are plenty more reasons why college is worth it. If you are struggling with how you can afford college, do some research. Learn what you can about the different types of loans. There are countless websites available with the purpose of helping students make college affordable and college loans manageable, such as StudentLoanHero.com. Don't give up hope. Invest in yourself.
